What is a Blog?
More information on Blogs is available here.
What should I put on my Blog?
Many blogs provide commentary or news on a particular subject. A typical blog combines text, images, and links to other blogs, Web pages, and other media related to its topic. The ability for readers to leave comments in an interactive format is an important part of many blogs. Most blogs are primarily textual, although some focus on art (artlog), photographs (photoblog), sketches (sketchblog), videos (vlog), music (MP3 blog), audio (podcasting), which are part of a wider network of social media.
Schools may wish to use a Blog to write about a particular class, project or school tour.
What does the word Blog mean?
If a diary on the website is a log entry on a website, then it is a web log. This was shortened to weblog, which soon became blog.
How do you password protect a post
Click Edit next to Visibility in the Publish area to the top right, then click Password Protected, click Ok, and enter a password. Then click OK. Note - Editor and Admin users can see password protected or private posts in the edit view without knowing the password.
How do I resolve the excerpt issue with the twenty ten theme?
When using the Twenty Ten theme, when displaying posts on pages, instead of showing the full post (or even the post until the <more> tag), it shows the post excerpt and strips out all the formatting and images. It also puts on a [...] at the end of the excerpt but this is not actually a URL link
To fix this issue do the following: At the top of the screen where you enter the posts you will notice a tab called 'Screen Options' and if you click that a set of options will slide down. One of these options is "Excerpt'. Tick that and click the "Screen Options' tab again. It will slide the options back up out of the way.
You now have an excerpt box at the bottom of your post. You can now add a proper summary (excerpt) of the post which gets displayed on the archive, search and category pages. If you don't have an expert attached to the post the default is to display the first 55 words of your post.
On the home page, the post is displayed differently and requires the use of the <--more--> tag.
Publishing your blog updates to External Services (Twitter / Facebook etc.)
Scoilnet Blogs does not offer a plugin to natively publish your blog updates to Twitter, or other online services, however each Scoilnet blog publishes an XML feed which is automatically updated when your blog content is updated. This XML feed can be used by external services such as https://ifttt.com or http://twitterfeed.com, which can read your Scoilnet blog XML feed and update your external service i.e. twitter, facebook etc. Your Scoilnet blog XML feed can be found at http://<BLOG-NAME>.scoilnet.ie/blog/feed i.e. http://eoinphoil.scoilnet.ie/blog/feed
