=== How do I block Images being downloaded from my website ===

There is a few different ways to block people downloading images from the web.  However, in most cases if someone really wants the image they can work around it. The following two options should discourage them anyway:

1. Embed each image within a flash movie. (the option to save image as is no longer available).

2. Use a photo program to place a sheer text overlay across the image that says "SAMPLE" or a logo, etc. You can see the photo through the text, but if someone tried to capture/print what's on your website, they would get one that says SAMPLE on it!

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get Web Hosting for my School

To apply for Web Hosting for your school please following the steps on http://www.pdsttechnologyineducation.ie/en/Technology/Webhosting-blogging/

How do I make my old school website go to my new scoilnet website?

You can point additional Domain Names to your Scoilnet website if you wish. Two steps are involved, you need to add the domain name as a domain alias to your scoilnet account and you need to ask your Domain Name Registrar to create a CNAME record for your domain, pointing at your scoilnet domain name.

Example: Your Scoilnet webhosting domain is school1.scoilnet.ie and you wish to point www.school1.ie at this website. You would request a CNAME for www.school1.ie to point at school1.scoilnet.ie from your Domain Name Registrar (the company you bought the domain from).

Can I run Perl / CGI / PHP / ASP scripts?

No the Scoilnet Webhosting services does not support these scripts. Only static HTML pages are supported.

Can I use an FTP client?

No, only WebDAV clients can be used. Instructions on uploading your site are available here.

FTP is an inherently insecure method of transferring files because there is no method specified for transferring data in an encrypted fashion. This means that under most network configurations, user names, passwords, FTP commands and transferred files can be "sniffed" or viewed by anyone on the same network using a packet sniffer.

Can I use this service to host other websites?

Currently only school websites are being hosted. Should you have a need for other websites please write to the PDST Technology in Education explaining your requirements.

You can point additional Domain Names to your Scoilnet website if you wish. Unfortunately at this moment, this will only work for your Static Website and your Blog will not support the additional domain name.

How much storage is available?

At the moment, there are no quotas in place, and no plans to implement a quota system. However, file uploads are monitored, and abuse will be dealt with.

How do I upload my website?

Instructions are available here

Are statistics available for my website?

Website Statistics are available using AWStats.

Should I save files directly to my WebDAV share?

Saving files directly to a WebDAV share (i.e. from within an application, such as Word, Excel or Internet Explorer) does not work reliably. For best results, save the file to your computer first and then upload it to your site.

Which folder should I copy my website to?

Upon logging into the webhosting service, the user is presented with a folder, the name of which is the website domain (i.e. school1.scoilnet.ie ). The contents of this directory is the contents of the school1.scoilnet.ie website. This is where you should copy your website files.

Can visitors leave feedback on my website?

Schools may wish visitors to their website to leave feedback, or to complete an online form. This is available using the Web Hosting Feedback Script.

What is good practice with regards photographs and data protection issues

The schools data protection policy is relevant here and schools can consult the Data Protection in Schools Website which has guidelines on taking and using Images/Photos. Also this Good Practice Note which is aimed at those working in schools concerns some of the data protection issues associated with a school website but the Data Protection in Schools Website should be consulted for the most up to date guidelines.
